Founded in 2000 by Greg Smith, Greg Smith Enterprises, Inc (GS Enterprises) started from humble beginnings in the basement of his suburban home in Lenexa, Kansas. A company built on the values of hard work, integrity, and fairness, GS Enterprises is the result of Greg’s lifelong commitment to the trucking industry—a commitment that began in childhood.
Born into the trucking world, Greg’s father, Bob Smith, was not only a truck driver but also the owner of All Freight Systems in Kansas City, KS. From a young age, Greg was immersed in the business, starting as early as fourth grade when he began servicing tires on his father’s tractors and trailers. This hands-on experience laid the foundation for Greg’s future in transportation.
After high school, Greg took his first steps into the industry, driving over-the-road and locally with All Freight Systems. Over the next four years, he honed his skills hauling everything from dry freight to refrigerated goods, learning the importance of on-time deliveries, safety, and attention to detail. It was during this time that Greg realized the key to success in the trucking business was treating drivers with respect and ensuring their well-being.
At 24, Greg transitioned into dispatching, gradually increasing his involvement in the operations of the business. By 30, he was promoted to Operations Manager, where he oversaw all aspects of the company, from driver management to equipment maintenance, load booking, and building relationships with customers. His entrepreneurial spirit was evident, and in 2000, he founded GS Enterprises as a freight brokerage.
Greg’s approach was simple: focus on exceptional customer service, treat drivers fairly, and build lasting relationships. By offering personalized attention and understanding the unique needs of both clients and drivers, GS Enterprises quickly grew, earning a reputation for reliability and dependability.
In 2001, Greg expanded the business by partnering with a large regional truck line as their Kansas City-based fleet manager. But Greg’s vision didn’t stop there. He saw the growing need to own a truck line to better serve his customers and ensure the same level of excellence. This foresight led to the formation of Smith Transportation in 2003, a lease-owner operator-based truck line.
Today, GS Enterprises and Smith Transportation continue to thrive by staying true to its core values: delivering on promises, prioritizing safety, and fostering a culture of mutual respect and loyalty. Through years of experience, Greg has built a company that puts people first—whether it’s clients, drivers, or employees—and it’s that commitment that has made GS Enterprises a trusted name in the transportation industry.
